OctoPrint with OEM Hardware Tutorial (FlashNGo)

its a cisco meraki mr18 access point using wpa2-psk security, password is 14 characters. i might try another wireless usb unit to see if its a hardware issue.

thanks thunder

well… the new update does fix connection for a few routers…

but, it seems like maybne the stock wifi dongle is crap overall.

if we can find a cheaply available, linux ready wifi adapter, maybe thats the way forward on this front.
the existing adapter works for most folks, but it seems like its … garbage overall.

wifi dongles are cheap… so if we can narrow down additional support for another one, then i can add native support for it to the build.

I am sorry i cannot repro your issue on my router. i use a open WRT build router for mine, and it doesnt seem to disconnect. at least theres a lot of options for you…

anyone want to put forward a cheap wifi dongle we can support? or i can look into modifying the driver for the included adapter, but theres not much motivation for it as i dont have the problem… sorry. i have 3 routers in my house, all running openwrt. ;/

I’m having the same issues with the Wi-Fi connection just dropping the printer needs to be restarted to get it to come back. This was with 1.8.4 and now also 1.8.6. I’m using an Xfinity cable modem router combo… seems crappy, but it’s pretty reliable as far as Wi-Fi goes. The router just doesn’t have any good configuration settings.

I’m going to try this one that I’ve used on RaspberryPi’s for a long time without any issues. It seems to work in the Cubieboard so far but I’ll update after a while to let you know if it’s stable: http://a.co/3Qm6qP2

Well after a few parts, I haven’t had it go belly up during a print… but I have had it go completely offline after a print was done a few times. Not every time though. It required a restart of the machine to get it back online. So if this keeps up I’ll probably switch to a RasPi… but I’m kind of avoiding it for now just due to shear laziness in not wanting to disassemble the zimboard to desolder the USB connector. BTW has anyone tried to connect the hardware serial connection of the zimboard to a RasPi yet on the GPIO connector (kind of like the cubieboard has done)?

EDIT: just had a longer print completely lock up on me. Pausing and Resuming seemed to get it unstuck, but now the part has a nasty melty spot in it. I guess I’ll get un-lazy and do the octo-pi mods now :smirk:

hm, alright guys, let me play around with it for a bit.
I’m midway through another update, but i’ll keep futzing with the wifi dongle. maybe updating kernel helps, as it should be a different driver set.

sorry for all the issues, it seemed to fix it for driph and others that tested it. will keep on it.

Maybe it helps if I said you that the problem seems not to be the WIFI Dongle. I do not have the wifi dongle installed at all, due my ZIM is in a wired network, but I also have the problems. Octoprint seems to crash or freeze for a minute or so. It’s not in every print, but sometimes it’s even multiple times in one part

When it locks up, it doesn’t appear to be Wi-Fi, but there is definitely some other failure mode where the entire printer is offline until it’s restarted.

EDIT: I had it lock up again, and this caused the extruder to jam for some reason. The ABS either crystallized in the nozzle or something else.

Interesting. As @waffles said above, my Zim has been way more stable since the last update. I generally run wired now because there’s cable right behind the printer anyway in its current location, but wifi was much more stable in general.

Hi @driph. Which last update are you referring to?

The latest waffles update, 1.8.6.

How do you install plugins and upgrade octoprint via putty?

I did it like this:
connect to the Cubieboard via putty with root / Longgang2014

  • mount -o remount,rw / ;sets the filesystem rewritable
  • /etc/init.d/octroprint stop ;stops octoprint service (which runs as user zim)
  • …wait a few seconds…
  • /etc/init.d/ octoprint start ;starts octoprint service (this time as root!)
  • …wait again…
  • open your browser and goto zim.local:5000
–> octoprint takes very long to start, so dontĀ“t be impatient… sometimes takes up to 3 minutes!

Due to you are logged into the filesystem as root and set it to rewritable, you can install plugins and upgrades. After a reboot, the filesystem goes back to write protected and normal user mode.
–> I also did a lot of other modifications, so this MIGHT not work as intended… please let me know.

I’m on oem hardware not octopi.

Hi Jayala. Youre on oem hardware, but you’re using octoprint, correct?
Its the same process for octoprint whether youre using the raspberry pi or oem hardware.

Have you solved the freezing issue with octoprint? I have the feeling that the more often I connect and disconnect to the web interface, the more often does the freezing and blobbing happen (kind of timeout of the web interface sessions?) But it’s only a feeling.
I can see the blobbing in the time lapse video, but I haven’t yet figured out parallels to certain actions.
I read in a german forum that the cubieboard seems to have some problems with debian jessie… maybe there’s a general problem with cubie?

We’re still on wheeze not Jessie so Prob not it. Been a bit busy with other projects… Will take a look I’m running low on ideas though so any suggestions are good to look at

Ya that freezing issue is really weird. Its not as bad as it was in earlier builds of the firmware but its still there. It happens like every 3rd or 4th print.

I have flashed both my Zims, notes for thoes who have more then one. First you need to define you IP in the camera settings, I had both printers showing the same camera. Two you will need to use the IP to connect. I Love this Hack!

May I have a copy of the Cura config file, I want to take a look. your settings are very well balanced and fast.

Thanks.

For 125$ is this printer worth the buy… i am more than capabale of flashing a sd card and modding a few things if need be

Has anyone got this to work? I still can’t get my octoprint to update. I followed the steps (I think) but no luck. I tried the update after it restarted and after I did an additional ā€œrwā€

I’m also having one other problem. On the control tab the tool select doesn’t work. I can see the dropdown for ā€œTool 0ā€ and ā€œTool 1ā€ but when I select one it goes back to ā€œSelect Toolā€. Which means I can’t extrude/retract manually. Not the biggest deal, but I started trying to upgrade to see if it would fix this. Any suggestions would be appreciated. I’m running 1.8.6 and 1.1.0.22
